Patterns for Life
2014
Brown pattern paper and ink
300cm x 200 cm (wall space) x 50 cm (out from the wall)

Patterns for Life is an installation containing hand-written narratives in the form of dressmaking patterns. These patterns contextualise the contents of two diaries Karen Hannon wrote for each of her daughters, now in their early twenties, from 2011 to 2013 titled 365 Pieces of Advice.
The layout of this installation includes the correct number of pattern pieces to make two dresses and resembles the ‘layout & cutting’ diagrams found in a typical dressmaking pattern packet.
The philosophy behind this artwork came from a desire of the artist to share her knowledge of life and its challenges with an audience as they journey through their world.
