Yi Cao draws inspiration from Buddhist philosophy and the practice of meditation. Yi’s work explores the mental process experienced in meditation practice, the ultimate goal of which is to achieve the "zero state" of silence, stillness and emptiness. While depicting an oceanic scene with graphite, Yi is creating the perfect tone of greyness, neither black nor white, which resembles the process of finding mental balance in meditation. Yi’s work highlights the state of quietude and peacefulness which have been lost in our fast-paced modern life, yet they are the sine qua non to cultivate a mental state that could make life much fuller.
