My Blanket
2014
Textiles, optical lights
200cm x 200cm

This work is strongly influenced by Ellen Zhu’s turbulent childhood. For a variety of reasons, since she was two years old, Ellen has had to constantly move and live between China and Australia. Under this circumstance she has always sought to fit in both cultures, but sometimes the more she tried the more distanced she felt. This work explores a sense of belonging that can be experienced without any culture boundaries. This art piece incorporates non-traditional textile materials with fundamental textile techniques that visually indicate the implication of how individuals attribute in the society and the need to be loved that inheres in human nature.
