Skin Samples
2014
Silicone
6cm x 8cm (series of 6 pieces)

Skin samples is a collection of silicone works about skin disease.
Elizabeth Owen’s hyper-real sculptures emphasise skin as an empathic, relational organ. At a time when science brings us closer to achieving bodily perfection and erasing time's marks from our own 'soft clocks', it is disease and pain, evidence of the body's vulnerability, that continue to make skin most visible.
This playful offering of medical maladies aims to challenge such behaviours of resistance by engaging the viewer in conflicting emotions of desire and revulsion, fear and fascination, empathy and objectification.
