Brooke Porteous’ work is a series of six mixed media drawings exploring self-representation in social media verses the reality. The work explores the issue of our lives becoming more a part of the public domain through social media, and how it is becoming harder to keep personal information private. The work uses ‘the gaze’ as a tool for communicating the ‘true’ and ‘fictional’ self that makes up a person’s persona. She draws over people’s ‘selfies’ to present their own self-portrayal, and using the responses to nine personal questions Brooke determines the medium, tone, colour and mark making.
