Rose Jurd’s practice navigates a precarious path between sexual subjecthood and objecthood, between defining one’s own sexuality while avoiding sexual exploitation.
In NeoFemme the women are positioned as both objects, and erotically charged, willing subjects. These works reclaim the female body from a prurient culture by re-examining what it means to be objectified.
The glittered body becomes a landscape for sexuality and the performance of femininity. It acts as a second skin, or a mirage reflecting the ‘gaze’ and deflecting from what resides underneath.
