Dominique Cahill’s practice is an ongoing exploration into the idea of an attraction/repulsion dichotomy, using the frameworks of burlesque and the grotesque to delve into identity, gender and sexuality. Through elaborate costumes, props and sets she explores themes of excess, debauchery, indulgence and artificiality. Dominique takes pleasure in the taboo and visceral, sensory experiences, promoting and exploring conflicting audience responses. Through the monstrous feminine and the female grotesque she aims to critique societal notions of beauty and femininity, creating a persona that is both a caricature of traditional femininity and a manifestation of ‘the other’.
