Araluen of the 1860s is forgotten and ignored. With thousands of people living in this gold mining valley during the mid nineteenth century it is intriguing that today there are few visual traces to indicate past activities.
By excavating newspapers of the time it is possible to draw a picture of the activities and the people who lived in the valley detecting an optimistic population fulfilling their ‘utopian’ dream. Today though, the valley is visually and aurally silent.
