Suffering childhood epilepsy, Anthea Mentzalis experienced coloured patterns and fractured shapes which altered her visual perception of time and reality. By distorting sharp, coloured, amorphous forms against blurred backgrounds, she hopes to translate her experience of epilepsy as a state of flux, simultaneously highlighting the essence of that fluctuation in a fixed space. Abstract painted geometric configurations, blurred and sharp focus, fluidity of coloured forms and vignettes will be manipulated to mimic this experience. Episodes evoke a distorted reality, creating dynamic configurations through the tension between blurry and sharp, moving and static. Thus, optical perception and its transience are explored.
