Attempt at equal giving and taking
Focusing on performed bodily slippage as a poetic visual language, Angela Faryal Butler investigates the artistic discourse of Islamic notions of remembrance, recitation and repetition of prayer (good intention), both as an outsider and an insider. During repetitive spiritual and religious acts, the corporeal form dissolves and spiritual engagement begins. As a performer, Angela moves away from literal modes of representation and engages with her own heartfelt and affective responses in an attempt to reinforce knowledge as well as write it to memory and the body.
