Yao Zhang was born in China but moved to Australia which opened up the West. Yao’s strong Asian cultural background, mixed with exposure to Western philosophy has helped make the artist a special bicultural and bilingual individual. The artwork explores ‘identity cross countries’ through the image of a second generation Australian who has mainly been educated in the Western way but has also been exposed to lots of Eastern influence. Yao is trying to present this kind of dislocation and disassociation and inner feelings.
